In this essay I will be discussing two disease, namely diphtheria and polio ,along with how it affects people in polar parts of the world.The term childhood disease is disputed because close all diseases children contract can too be contract by adults, children can also catch diseases not categorise as childhood diseases. Both diseases here can be prevented through vaccination, but it varies between countries, growth countries like the Netherlands which countenance a stable economy can afford to give away vaccines free to newly born children, while in developing countries such as India or Pakistan which have quite a large population living in poverty and a not so stable economy cant afford to vaccinate everyone.These countries have a higher mortality rate rate than developed ones because of this and the fact that in rural communities hospitals a few and far between.In this essay will show how the two diseases work, how they infect people and the effect of them in different countries.
Polio, also called poliomyelitis is a contagious infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.These types of viruses like to inhabit the gastrointestinal tract and causes infection in only humans.It has a simple structure, composed of a virtuoso sense ribonucleic acid enclosed in a protein cellular phone called a capsid.
Three types of poliovirus have been discovered so far, these have a similar genetic profile and are classified as serotypes.The virus enters through the mouth and finds its way down the pharynx where it multiplies, in the throat as well as the stomachal tract.From here it is transferred to the bloodstream and finds its way to the nervous system where it replicates and destroys labor neuron which control muscles.Human nerve cells have a protein come out on them,the poliovirus attaches itself to this and the infection begins.(FIG 1)The virus hijacks the cell and produces thousands of copies of itself in a very short time.
