Castels were origanly strengthened in Britan for a number of purposes;wealthy familys such as king and queens, struggle the civil wars and defence from the french. The castels could be used as a base for defence or living areas. In 1138-1160 each castels were mainly woodlanden motte and bailey castels. Then in 1240-1300 the keep/curtian environ/barbican/privy chamber/great hall were strengthened (all colliery construction). In 1300-1352 domestic buildings were added like the larder and kitchin. In 1483-1485 such things as constabels lodgings, the tower added to the bake house and oven built in the bailey were just a few changes made to the castel. As you can see from thease little changes the castle really started to work up and become a lot more moden and up to date. The difficulties in using the site as a source of evidance is that theres non that much evidence leftover at the site , whats left of it dosent tell us very much. Although the written sources are instead useful as they tell us how the castels were and looked. But we cant belive everything that is tell as some of the written surveys were written by multitude who were trying to sell the castel. Therefor they may have exadurated the apperance and qauilty of the castle.





A castle was desinged to defend and to keep people safe in spite of appearance it. Althoug a castle was much easier to defend than to attak.
The first castle to be built was a wood motte and baliey. A wood motte bailey was pricey as it was cheap and quicker to build in time it was easier to destroy and decayed much quicker.
In c1100 a stone motte bailey castle was built this was more expansive to build than a wooden motte bailey but lasted longer and its defence was much better. In 1277 concentric castles were built. concentric castles were masively expensive and were very effective because of its good defence.
