The different roles of Mary and their affect on Women of the time
During the 12th to 15th centuries the complete(a) Mary became a growing icon in Christian art. Do to a large following of non-church members and a history of apocrypha that was continually envisioned throughout this time period, Mary became the most influential female person image. During this shift, Mary occupied the roles of mother, woman and saint. Each of these roles has been depicted by a huge spectrum of art, song, and prayer. Her responsibilities have ranged from a vessel of the lord to a mediator between Christ and humanity. Investigating a sampling of these works will illuminate how the redefinition of these roles was marked and sometimes changed through images of the Virgin. Images of Mary had special significance to medieval women because she was the sole female deity in a high military posture in the church. Addressing how the iconography of the Virgin was viewed and internalized by women will shine a light on the overall social significance of Mary.
