The Black Death

The ravage plague known as the Black Death, smitten fourteenth-century Europe when it was already suffering from overpopulations and poor personal hygiene. At the time Europe suffered from climate changes, conflicts of famine, and malnutrition. All of these problems made it ofttimes easier for the plague to quickly spread around. When it hit Europe, the large number had no understandment whats so ever and therefore the Europeans responded to the plague in 1347 with flagellance based on religious superstition, inadequate medical examination procedures, and metropolis policies based on a false understanding of the disease.

Flagellance were events when people marched naked and whipped themselves as a way of relieving their sins to God. In the form of the procession of Flagellants at Tournia in Flanders we clearly empathise their plunder emotions (Doc1). The artist purpose at the time was to demonstrate secure an image of the flagellance, but it conveys even beyond that. We clearly see their deplorable emotions on their facial expressions. We can also conceive of the afflicting whippings they gave themselves and the fear they inquired at the time.



Including the atrocious supplications they conducted to God or how Robert of Avesbury describes it in the streets of London, Thrice they would all cast themselves on the ground in this sort of procession, stretching out their hands like the mail of the cross (Doc5). This reflects their understanding that the flagellants provided a kind of diversion for the overt and held out the promise that their pain might bring an stop to the greater suffering of the living victims of the plague. They also believed the calamity that it was a vengeance of God upon the sinful world. Of course this was all comely superstition from the people.

When Europeans werent conducted in flagellance they turned to inadequate medical procedures.
