The First period he talked about was the Romantic Period that started in 1930 and end in 1970. This was still during the period of the colonial rule, and the overall main fundament of this period dealt with the cultural diversities that were going on in Africa. some other theme he talked about during this period was how there were youth politicians leading Africa towards independence, in which Legum was intrigued by. He expressed the perspectives of some of the small nationalist like Jomo Kenyatta, Julius Nyerere, and Kwame Nkrumah. The second period explained was the Disillusionment period, which Legum further explained as the Disillusionment Decade. This period consisted of what exactly was the cause of a non- participatory tendency of government in Africa. For example, the many failed attempts of economic benefits and development, violence, armament regimes, ethnic conflict, and the economic decline were all reasons in which caused the style of government in Africa.
This period lasted from 1970-1985 but Legum argued that this period ended in 1980 do to the period of Realism in which he informs the readers about in Africa Sense Independence. Legum believed that during this period a democratic government and economic development was stressed amongst the society. The Final period he talked about was the Renaissance Period, in which he questioned was contemporaneous Africa a period of Renaissance. Legum goes into describing the maturation from innocence through the high-mindedness of youth to the measured sobriety of adulthood, as well as how they were treated as pariahs.
