Justifiable Violence
Is violence ever a justifiable retort to whatsoever singles wrong doing? This is a question that has been speculated for umteen centuries. It pops up daily in society and influences the media and literature. While some may question the cruelty of violence, others realize that in legitimate cases, it is very much justified.
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, is one of the well known pieces of literature that has raised more questions close the justification of violence. A prime example of this act would be where Caderousse has just been stabbed. Caderousse had been trying to rob his house when he is caught by a priest, who is actually the Count in disguise. After existence offered help by the priest, Caderousse tries to kill him. The Count, or the priest, stops him and he leaves, only to be stabbed when he exits the house. As he send on the ground bleeding, he exclaims to the Count, You didnt tell me! You knew I was going to be killed when I left here, and you didnt find fault with me!. The Count then retorts, No, for I saw the justice of deity in Benedettos hand, and I would have considered it a blasphemy to oppose the intentions of Providence (Dumas 341). Critic Bryan Aubrey comments on this act, The Byronic hero is a much more complex figure than Monte Cristo.
He is usually guilty of some sin or transgression against societys laws, and searches for meaning in a worldly concern that refuses to yield one (2). Therefore Caderousse is oblivious as to when it is condemnation to give up, which can be seen by how he tries to remove from his friends or loved ones, and even attempt to kill the batch that tried to help him. His murder was justified because he of necessity to understand the pain and suffering that he made his wife and the jeweler feel.
Another questionable act from this book is when Monsieur Villefort demands that his wife kills herself after she has murdered his daughter, which portrays the idea of an eye for an eye.
