Kino, the main character of The Pearl, is a poor, Indian fisherman living on the disconnect of California with his wife, Juana, and son, Coyotito. Their small hut is made of brush, and the couple sleeps on mats thrown on the dirt floor, season Coyotito sleeps in a hanging box. Kino always started in the morning, where one solar day he found the biggest pearl worth much money. Kino was all about his son and his people in the beginning, just now after he found the pearl, he bacame obssessed with it, wealth and his sons hearty being. Although, after he travels into the city to sell his pearl for a reasonable price; he starts to covet the pearl over anything. In the end, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito get stuck in a cave while the trackers sleep for the darkness.

When Coyotito cries because he got restless, the trackers shoot in their direction intellection it was just a baby coyote, killing Coyotito. Kino was already ready to attack so after the tracker shot, Kino attacked the trio trackers and killed all three. At the end of the novella, Kino returned to the city, chucking the oh-so-mighty pearl second into the lake, remembering all the hate and grief of what had happened. Kinos tranquil relationship with nature had been perverted and reversed, a multifariousness signified by the fact that Kino finds the sounds of the animals at night threatening rather than reassuring, showing everyone that riches can bring pain and consequences.
